The Growing Momentum Behind Neurodegenerative Disease Research

How innovation, investment and talent are advancing Alzheimer's disease and other neurological disorders

My interest in neuroscience and neurodegenerative diseases stems from both professional and personal experience.
My first step into executive search was through a Talent Acquisition role at a pharmaceutical neuroscience research centre, where I was exposed to the work being carried out by scientists and researchers dedicated to understanding diseases of the brain and nervous system. Working alongside experts in the field gave me an appreciation for the complexity of neurological disorders and the talent required to drive scientific discovery forward.
At the time, my interest in neuroscience was largely professional. Over the last few years, however, that interest has become personal.
My mother-in-law recently passed away, and the final years of her life were dictated by Alzheimer's disease. The progression of the disease was both heart breaking and eye-opening. Alzheimer's gradually took away her memories, her independence and many of the characteristics that defined her.
Sadly, our experience is far from unique.
In 2021, an estimated 57 million people worldwide were living with dementia, with nearly 10 million new cases occurring each year. Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia, accounting for an estimated 60–70% of cases. Dementia is also the seventh leading cause of death globally and a major cause of disability and dependency among older adults (World Health Organization, 2025).
Closer to home, there are approximately 982,000 people living with dementia in the UK, a figure expected to rise to 1.4 million by 2040. Alzheimer's Research UK also reports that one in two people will be affected by dementia during their lifetime, either through developing the condition themselves, caring for someone with dementia, or both (Alzheimer's Research UK, 2026).
These statistics demonstrate why neurodegenerative diseases represent one of the greatest healthcare challenges of our time.
Understanding Neurodegenerative Disease
Neurodegenerative diseases are characterised by the progressive deterioration and loss of neurons within the brain and nervous system. Unlike an acute injury, the damage unfolds gradually, often over many years.
Some of the most well-known neurodegenerative conditions include:
• Alzheimer's disease
• Parkinson's disease
• Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)
• Huntington's disease
Although these diseases affect different parts of the nervous system, they share a common feature: the gradual loss of nerve cell function, ultimately leading to cognitive, physical or behavioural decline.
Despite decades of research, effective treatments remain limited, making ongoing scientific innovation essential.
A Sector Gaining Momentum
One encouraging development is the renewed investment being directed towards neuroscience and neurodegenerative disease research.
According to Nature, neuroscience drug research and development has experienced a resurgence in recent years, with major pharmaceutical companies increasingly pursuing novel approaches to neurodegenerative disease beyond traditional amyloid-focused Alzheimer's therapies (Nature, 2025).
Several notable transactions illustrate this momentum:
• Sanofi acquired Vigil Neuroscience for at least $470 million to advance VG-3927, a therapy targeting TREM2 and microglial activity in Alzheimer's disease (Nature, 2025).
• Eli Lilly entered into a deal with Alchemab Therapeutics worth up to $415 million to develop ATLX-1282, a therapy candidate for ALS (Nature, 2025).
• Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma and Dewpoint Therapeutics announced a collaboration valued at up to $480 million focused on therapies targeting TDP-43 pathology, a feature present in many ALS patients (Nature, 2025).
While these figures are impressive, the true significance of these deals extends beyond corporate strategy and financial investment.
What These Deals Mean for Patients
For patients and families, these transactions represent hope.
Many early-stage biotechnology companies possess groundbreaking scientific ideas but lack the resources required to conduct large clinical trials. Partnerships with larger pharmaceutical companies provide funding, development expertise and global infrastructure that can help accelerate the journey from laboratory discovery to potential treatment.
Importantly, these collaborations demonstrate a willingness to explore new biological pathways and disease mechanisms. Rather than focusing solely on established targets, researchers are increasingly investigating neuroinflammation, immune system regulation and abnormal protein accumulation as potential routes to treatment (Nature, 2025).
For conditions such as Alzheimer's disease and ALS, where unmet clinical need remains substantial, this diversification of scientific approaches is particularly encouraging.
The Vital Role of Patients in Clinical Research
However, even the most promising therapy cannot advance without one critical ingredient: patients.
Clinical trials are the bridge between scientific discovery and approved treatment. Every new medicine relies upon individuals who are willing to participate in research studies, often while managing the challenges of a life-changing diagnosis.
Patients contribute far more than data. They help researchers understand how diseases progress, determine whether treatments are safe and effective, and identify outcomes that genuinely improve quality of life.
Even when a clinical trial does not achieve its primary objectives, the information generated can provide valuable insights that inform future studies and guide the development of future therapies.
In many ways, patients are not simply participants in research—they are partners in scientific progress.
Final Thoughts
My experience at the neuroscience research centre introduced me to the science behind neurodegenerative diseases. My family's experience with Alzheimer's showed me their human impact.
Together, these experiences have reinforced my belief that neuroscience research has never been more important.
Behind every investment, acquisition and collaboration are millions of patients and families waiting for better treatment options. While there are no guarantees in drug development, the growing commitment from researchers, biotech innovators, pharmaceutical companies and clinical trial participants offers genuine reason for optimism.
For families, progress in neurodegenerative disease research is not simply about scientific achievement. It is about preserving memories, maintaining independence and improving quality of life for future generations.
As someone who cares deeply about this area, both professionally and personally, I am always interested in speaking with organisations working across neuroscience, neurodegeneration and the wider life sciences sector.
After all, the future of neuroscience depends not only on great science, but on great people.
