Thoughts from the beach - Ageing, learning and seniorlytics!

Last weekend, I spent a day at the beach with family and friends aged 6 to 70. The younger ones threw themselves into the sea and into sandcastle building—fearless, curious, and quick to learn from mistakes. The older adults contributed stories and thoughtful advice, grounding our fun in lived experience.


Children are called “sponges” for good reason: their brains form up to a million new connections every second (Harvard Center on the Developing Child). As we age, we often lose some of that exploratory spirit—held back by fear of “not knowing.”


But learning doesn’t end with youth. Neuroscience confirms our brains stay adaptable; experience simply changes how we learn. As Carol Dweck puts it, “Becoming is better than being.” That mindset matters at every life stage.



From the Beach to Biotech: The Rise of Seniorlytics


A conversation earlier in the week introduced me to the term Seniorlytics—the use of advanced data, AI, and analytics to improve health, wellbeing, and engagement for older adults. It’s an emerging frontier, and the demographic tailwinds are clear: by 2030, 1 in 6 people globally will be over 60 (UN).


Early‑stage biotechs and startups are already shaping this space. A few examples:


  • Neurotrack — digital cognitive health tools for early detection and prevention of cognitive decline.

  • Bold — science‑based exercise programmes designed to improve strength, balance, and wellness in older adults.

  • GetSetUp — interactive learning classes that help older adults master new skills and stay connected.

  • MIT AgeLab — an innovation hub supporting ventures focused on healthy ageing, mobility, and lifelong learning.


Investors are paying attention. Crunchbase reports that global venture funding in “age‑tech” reached over $2 billion in 2023—clear evidence that later‑life learning, health, and engagement represent both urgency and opportunity.


Implications for Leaders and the Future of Work


For employers in life sciences and beyond, supporting lifelong learning across all generations is more than a moral imperative—it’s a strategic necessity. The World Economic Forum predicts a major talent shortfall by 2030, and Deloitte notes that age‑diverse organisations outperform peers in adaptability and innovation.


The question for leaders becomes:


Are we making it easy for both the youngest and oldest on our teams to learn, share, and grow?  


And equally: Are we open to insights emerging from Seniorlytics and from the younger, agile biotechs driving innovation in later‑life health?
